Help with Alexander Smith
« on: Monday 07 March 22 19:35 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find out more about an ancestor named Alexander Smith. He was born in Archiestown, Knockando, Moray on January 28th 1867, to parents Peter Smith (Farm Servant) and Margaret MS Morrison. He was one of nine siblings.

I can find him on the 1871 census, with his mother and some siblings in Knockando, and again on the 1881 census, with both his parents and one sister (still in Knockando).

In 1891, he is living on Taylor Street, in the Barony/St Rollox area of Glasgow, in the house of his sister Annie and her husband John. At this point Alexander is a Grocer's Assistant.

I believe he then married Elizabeth Allison McGregor on January 1st 1895, in Blythswood, Glasgow. He is a Grocer on the marriage certificate. He seems to be on the 1895 Valuation Roll for 18 Broompark Drive.

Elizabeth died on December 31st 1896 and after this I lose track of Alexander. I have an unreliable family history report done by someone else some years ago that suggests he may have gone on to be a missionary in Malawi(?!) and that he also married again and had 4 children.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

It might help to know that the country now known as Malawi was known as Nyasaland until 1964.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
