Help I have a medal which needs a home.
« on: Friday 11 March 22 03:07 GMT (UK) »
I have a medal which somehow has ended up with my grandfathers medals it is clearly not his as he didn't fight in WW1 and it has a name engraved on the back of it S.J.T Hall, H.L.I which I think might be the Highland Light Infantry. It is a 1914-15 Campaign Star, I read up that these medals were not given out singularly and I also have a British War Medal with it which I suspect goes with it. there is also another number engraved on the back which I don't know what it means 1395? would that be his number. Id love to find out more about this medal and hopefully track down the relatives to send it to them

He may have used the middle name of Thomas,
Thomas Hall
Military Date 1914-1920
Regiment or Corps:   1/6 Bn High Li, 1/6 Bn Scots R
Regimental Number - 1395, 1395

Theatre of War  - Balkans
Qualifying date 2 July 1915

He received the British, Victory and 15 Star.
On the back of the Medal Roll card under the Printed word Correspondence is written
"Extracted from B. W and Vic medal roll. D/104 B1/65. I have no idea what this means.

Thomas Hall, Sergeant, Highland Light Infantry
Regiment Number:   1395
Awarded British War Medal and Victory Medals

I wonder if the S J is meant to be Sgt and not part of his first name initials.

This man has many handwritten notes and  acronyms on his Medal Roll index card and Medal and Awards entry.
I don't fully understand them but someone else will be along to take a look and will know what some or all of them mean.
Unfortunately his service record seems to have been amongst the 60% plus of WW1 service records that were detroyed by bombing and water damage in WW11.

Written on the medal is
SJT.  T. Hall
SJT = Sergeant
S J are not initials for his name

Look on the outside rim of the other medals to see any name or number.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

the 1915-1915 star is the only one that has any extra markings on them,
but that's fab to know that SJT is the initials for sergeant

I didnt realise that there was engravings on the rims so thank you for that tip. The silver round medal around the rim says SJT Hall RL and the Bronze round medal says SJT Hall 1385 (I think it could be 1395 hard to read), which is fabulous as we know this set belongs together
