Likewise. It's certainly the simplest explanation.

Martha with an Irish accent might be heard as Matthew, and the Registrar wouldn't necessarily have asked the child's sex separately.

I have a couple of similar cases - one involving a child named James who is in a census as Jane.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
