Ernest Hanson WW1 Shropshire Yeomanry & 2nd KOYLIs (50792)
« on: Saturday 12 March 22 11:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi

My grandfather was called up on 29thSept 1917 and served in the above. He told me he had served in Northumberland and Ireland and at one time was guarding POWs. I am trying to narrow down where he served and the nearest I could find for both locations was the 1st Reserve Garrison. battalion of the KOYLIs who were at Seaton Carew in 1917 and Berehaven county Cork in May 1918 but this doesn’t match the above! He also started in the 76th ( ?) I,J RB - difficult to tell the writing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Ian Lambert

Do you know where your grandfather was born?

Do you know if he ever lived in Bradford?

Hi

He was born in New Ferry, Wirral Cheshire and lived all his life on the Wirral. His family were all previously from the Stretton in Shropshire. Could this be why he was in the Shropshire Yeomanry or is this a coincidence for I am no military expert.

Find My past hold a record for a Ernest Hanson, the 'cover page' shows that he was in the 1st Garrison Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry with a service number close to your grandfather's. However, when I start to examine the actual record, this Ernest Hanson was born in 1891 in the Elland Parish, West Yorkshire so not your man.

Hope I didn't build your hopes up too much.
