Andreas Andersen Schmidt 1847-1918
« on: Sunday 13 March 22 20:15 GMT (UK) »
Andreas was born 16 March 1847-Edslev Mark Kolt Ning Aarhus Denmark-His parents were Anders Andreasen and Ane Jensdsatter.
Andreas married 1867 to Maren Jacobsen of Framlev Aarhus Dk.
How did his surname become Schmidt, rather than remaining as Andreasen or Andersen. All Andreas's children from then on kept the surname of Schmidt.
If the father Anders had other children, I am unaware of them, or if others, did they also change their surnames?   Can you help with this please? Ankerpep-52 (Janet)

In 1828 Denmark had moved to modern surnames instead of patronyms (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavian_family_name_etymology).

They could have used Andersen or Andreasen as their future surname, but apparently this specific family decided to use dad's profession of blacksmith ("smed") as their surname instead (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G94W-VD87?i=25).

Hi
Here is Anders Andreasen's birth record - 1806 - nr 17:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17124616#165763,27848083

His father is named as Andreas Sørensen Smed.
It looks as though the Schmidt/Smed in the surname had been around early on.

1834 - Census:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=2669#2669,89005 - 2nd family. No Anders.

1867 - Marriage - Andreas Andersen Schmidt and Maren:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17126680#169676,28489630 - nr 5

Sorry for the delay in responding to your query in March 2022- This info. came from the 2xgrt grandaughter, by name of Flemming Schmidt. (my cousin was in contact via family tree)  I also looked up some information quite a while ago on Flemming who appears to be the son of a Schmidt but forenames of Flemming's father is very different.    ankerpep.(Janet)

Re: your post 14 March-the father must have remarried if he was a widower in 1840 and son born 1847.  The other Census records did confirm the mothers name as Jensdatter rather than Laursdatter as in a different reply from someone else.  Thank you  ankerpep (Janet)

Tree Spirit-March 14 reply to my querie-Thank you for this information as the 2 children were it appeardifficults stillborn in 1844 & 1852 and verifies parents as Ane and Anders.  Anders was not a widower then in 1840 census Anders is 33 and you said he was a widower-probably wrong person if he was still listed as father to these unborn children.  So many people had the same names ad could have been in the same town, village, city.  It is hard to read the writing in the older records and the handwriting of some is very difficult to decifer.
