Arthur Patten b.c 1831-4 Ridgewell Essex.

1841 Arthur Patten is 10 yrs old living with Robert Gatward and wife Rebecca (mdn Patten) in Castle Hedingham.
1851 Now 20  occ. Shoemaker u/m b.Ridgewell is a visitor to the above.
1861,age27 occ Boot/shoe maker b. Ridgewell, married to Jane 1858, living Grt Dunmow.
1871 Arthur 37 occ shoemaker now says b. Castle Hedingham lives Morton/ Rochester
1881 Arthur living in N. Ockendon before passing away in 1888.
My problem is I cannot find a birth/baptism for Arthur to clarify who is parents were. Was Rebecca Patten b. Pebmarsh wife of Robert Gatward, his mother b. pre marriage which does seem likely or was he a relative.
Any help to clarify would be appreciated TIA.

Does he give a father's name on his marriage certificate? Registered Dunmow, Dec Q. Vol 4a Page 732.
He married Jane Glasscock.

Never mind I found it on family search. Arthur was 27 (born circa 1831) said his father was Thomas Patten!
Jane Glasscock was 37 a widow father James Leech
Married 28 December 1858 Non-Conformist Church Great Dunmow.
 
He either made up a father's name to be more respectable, or that's what his mother told him.

The Essex Record Office has apprenticeship records, not indexed by name.
You could request a search for Arthur starting age 11. starting 1842 depending on birth date for 7 years.

Thank you so very much. I wonder if Thomas Patten was a sibling of Rebecca's or if as you say he may have been told that.  I will go searching for more on her and her family to see what comes up. Many thanks again, I'm very grateful.

Can other's help and disregard the baptism of an Arthut PARTIEN bap 5th Feb 1832 Thaxted, parents John & Sarah as I cannot find them in 1841 census.
