Hi Billy

I have made some good contacts through Genes Reunited but don't use it very often now I have found Rootschat. You say you used the tips board because you are a novice. Well now you have found us use us instead. Our beginners board is great and so is the rest of the site.

Glad you are on board

Hi
No you are not going insane .............yet !! That will happen some way along this wacky hobby!
I as a novice (and I still am in comparison with some brilliant folk in here) I used Ancestry, which found me PrueM, the first decendant that  I knew nothing about. Also Family org which is great to surf then I joined up with GR. It does have its faults but it has surfaced an unknown relly who had photos (C1860) of my gg grandfather, his wife, a daughter and her husband. & from this I have found the name of my ggg grandfather (but have no idea to date any more about him)
Use that site as you need, I just tend to use the message boards periodically as a speed read to see if any other decendants have ventured out of the wood work and for £7.50 it is a bargain in this expensive research world............ except roots of course which is refreshingly FREE!!

Happy hunting (as they say ) & keep taking a sip of the scotch  ;D

G'day Cal,

Thanks for your message.

I'm just bluebladdered you've had such a great time with GR. I'm brand new. It must be great to have got as far as you have.

You sound like you have a fair idea, I am sure you will find out about your ggg father in time.

Thanks bundles for yr advice.

Can I ask a question which I know all you guys will laugh your heads off at, but we've all got to start somewhere:

What is the difference between a descendant and an ascendant ?

By the way, looks like you've got another Botham.

Hi Bluebladdered Bill,
Prue from Canberra here - but don't hold that against me!!!  Brisbane's my hometown, and when the weather's like this (10 degrees and gloomy) I wish I was back up there  :'(

Anyway, I'm the PrueM that Cal mentioned in her post.  Genes Reunited has given me several connections as well, I have never used any other function than the family tree, and the message posting.  I never look at the boards.  Rootschat takes up too much of my time as it is!  :P

Regarding descendants and ascendants...well, in genealogy we don't have ascendants, those occur in astronomy as far as I know!  We have descendants and ancestors.  Descendants are like you and me - we are descended from people who came before us.  Ancestors ARE the people who came before us.  I guess we will also be ancestors when we have one or more generations descended from us.

You can have antecedents (?spelling) as well, which is the same as an ancestor.

Hope that helped

Prue

Julian,

Are you still there.

I just got stuck on my printing

Billy

You can still access your tree on Genes Reunited "the old way".  Under the advert on the left-hand side is a link to "Old Tree Programme".

Apologies if you already knew this.

And keep asking the questions! Even the most experienced do so - there's such an amazing breadth of expertise on here.

G'day Julian,

I'm real sorry mate, I didn't realise I kept you up half the night.

I was ok with the old tree thingy. It was that which I couldn't print off, but thanks to your help re: PAF, everything is now under control.

Best regards mate

Bill

No worries - it was fun and a joy to hear that you got there!  We'll take the Ashes as a consolation for my late night (will these words come back to haunt me?)

Hi Billy

I think I am going insane with you. I looked at Genes Reunited and now they have changed it I can't find what I wanted. I was looking for the downloadable forms but they eluded me.

Think I'll stick with Rootschat
