Latin is the reason I reckon

I settled on the Anderson mother actually, she was a widow, her maiden name Garner. They were married at Holy Trinity Liverpool then are found in Ormskirk, then moved to St Helens where they settled. I should say that I got the fathers name from her marriage record and then looked for that in Ormskirk and St Helens.

I messaged  Ormskirk District Family History group and they say the records for Christenings in Ormskirk Library seem to get thinner at the end of the first book, perhaps they were damaged, also Lydiate records are missing the same years strangely. She's also checked the Lancashire archives and it is the same there.

She gave me a tip, to write to Douai Abbey Berkshire because they hold some copies of Benedictine records and may have these. If anyone else is looking.

Looks like a dead end though.

I see there is another candidate for Catherine b Ormskirk - Cathrine with mmn Anderson

There is a marriage for Robert Howard and Jane Anderson (nee Garner)
This Robert is a Cordwainer in 1844.

The Robert on 1851 census was a carter.

In 1861 2754 /34/9 he is a Farm Labourer.

There are a couple of newspaper snippets 1857 which mentions a Robert Howard and Thomas Charnock and selling/carting coal. I can’t see the articles so not sure. It might, of course, not be the same Robert.

I just wonder if he sought work wherever he could.

There is a Thomas Charnock, coal Carter in 1851.

Yeah, still gathering onfo for them of course but Catherines father was a shoemaker/cordwainer and so was her uncle, family trade by the looks of it. In 1851 Robert was then a carter and in 61 when they moved to Sutton he was a farmworker (probably carter) there also.  I think I will send for the civil record of Catherine's birth and see what it says there. It must be the correct girl though, she married a man who was born in Preston and this combination of names and birthplaces is not usual in the town they settled. It stands out,  for those parents to move there with that daughter, it's the only way they could have met because her husband was never in Ormskirk.
The marriage of her parents Robert/ Jane, he a cordwainer was at Holy Trinity, Liverpool, his father a joiner,  her father was a painter, she was from Liverpool and he Ormskirk although living in Liverpool then.

Thanks heywood for that newspaper info I will take a look around for it.
