Barnet Hendon Union Egware Workhouse & Hampstead Workhouse.
« on: Saturday 19 March 22 10:23 GMT (UK) »
Good morning and apologies for the lack of knowledge in the searching of my below query.

I have a relative whose birth has not been registered but his baptism appears on Ancestry:

Baptised 18.11.1849 St John's Hampstead born: 18.10.1849
Frederick William George. Father Samuel & Mary Ann Varnell Hampstead Messenger

His parents are Samuel Varnell and Mary Ann Humphreys. I have used every alternative spelling of VARNELL including PARNELL/FARNELL etc etc.

I found Frederick's admission Barnet Hendon Union Egware Workhouse Friday 14.02.1890 Varnell Frederick Billiard Marker Religion:EC b:1850 Parish from which admitted: Willesden Oberservations on admittance: ILL.

His discharge record Barnet Hendon Union Egware Workhouse Saturday 29.03.1890
Varnell Frederick discharged at own request Parish from which admitted: Willesden.

I have been unable to locate him in the 1891 census.

I found his death and have received his death certificate: 27.03.1899 Hampstead Workhouse.
He died of Chronic Hepatitis, Hypertrophy and dilation of heart. PM. Certified by E C Taylor M.D.
H.C. Russell Master Hampstead Workhouse was the informant. (his age on his death cert does not correspond with his age BUT it's definitely my Frederick)

I assume that there was a Post Mortem and may not necessarily appear recorded anywhere like a newspaper.

Does anyone know if there are any records held anywhere for Hampstead Workhouse that would cover March 1899 please?

I am happy to pay for a research fee etc but I am a little lost as to who/where I have to enquire about any possible records for Hampstead Workhouse.

Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to any replies.

regards

Sarah

I have found this link works for my ancestors in other London Workhouses.  You can make a free search but then you would need to pay to go any further.  Hope this helps.

Religious creed register has Frederick Varnell, Compositor, admissions to Hampstead workhouse in 1894 and 1895. Says he is widowed.
Uncle Mr F Humphreys

The next register records his death, 27.3.99

Here he is in the Register of Deaths in the Workhouse

Yes, you may be able to find these records on ancestry as well.

Earlier admissions in 1893 (on same page) saying Frederick was married, single, nearest relative his mother!
Give the link to ancestry this time

So Frederick was a billiard marker on the Hendon workhouse admission.
The various admissions to Hampstead workhouse for Frederick Varnell born 1848-1852 have occupation gardener, labourer, compositor, with different marital status. Are these all the same Frederick?

Thank you pandacub I did find that London Workhouse link yesterday unfortunately it didn't cover the Hampstead Workhouse.

jonw65 wow, thank you that information you posted was amazing! I would have never found that! It's informative and confirms that Frederick is listed as:

1881 census 101 Cambridge Road Willesden
Frederick Parnell HD M 31yrs Compositor b: Hampstead
Anne or Annie Parnell WI M 21yrs b: Brixton
Frederick Parnell SO 18 months b: North Bow

He is living with his family in the 1871 census and is listed as a Compositor too. I imagine with Chronic Hepatitis as a cause of death perhaps the Gardener occupation in 1890 was all he could do.

Thank you again, another trawl of the 1891 census will start again!
