So he wasn't in the British Army in the 1920's

Or was he? His death is reported in the Army Returns 1926-1930 (Adra, 1928, 229) which would strongly suggest that he was still in the British Army.

Interestingly, when I tried to order it off the GRO last year, they said I hadn't supplied enough information for them to be able to find the death cert. I gave them the above info + his name but they took the £3.50 for the search and gave me nothing!

I have news!

The British Library had a record of Louis Coley (wrong spelling but correct regimental number) in the 1922 India unattached list and it is very helpful. The corps he was in were HQ'd in Gorakhpur, which would explain how his met his future wife, as her family were Indigo planters there.

I have googled what the Bengal & NW Railway regiment did so have info on that now.

It's fascinating and I love it when things all fall into place  ;D

Thanks you both for your help so far, you've been great

Can you tell me if my basic understanding is correct:

1) He joined the British Army in Lincolnshire in May 1913. He saw action in France and Belgium in WW1 and was injured. His unit was then sent to India to assist the British Empire war effort there.

2) At the end of WW1, he left the British Army and then instead joined the AFI which was a part-time, paid volunteer organisation within the Indian Army in British India. It was made up of white British and Anglo-Indian men.

3) He got back to England at some point as he got Miss Lilian Beryl Keech/Keich/Kelch pregnant. I have the daughter's birth cert now and it doesn't look like Keech. I am going to try to trace the mother.
