"Missing" relative Charles Parker: born in Winchester in 1850
« on: Monday 21 March 22 07:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

I'm very new to the forum. I'm looking for ideas about where to find my ancestor.

It's tricky because he emigrated to Argentina and went back to England about 1899, and there's where I lose his track.

Charles Parker: born in Winchester in 1850. Found on 1851, -61, -71, -81 Census (Censi?) Married to Susan Perry (or Phillips from a previous marriage). Had 3 daughters, went to Argentina in 1889 (found in passenger list). Last records I have of him is the Argentinian Census of 1895.

From there on is just family information. Charles' grandson was told he went back to England in 1899 -with the purpose of bringing "more family" back with him- but died in an accident in Liverpool.

I can't verify any of this. I can't find "my" Charles Parker in any passenger list, leaving Argentina or incoming to England. There are a couple deaths with this name, in 1897 and 1898 but they appear to be locals. Nothing found on newspapers about an accident.

I believe Charles -if he went to England indeed- may have lived longer and even remarried. There's a Charles Parker in the 1911 census listed as visitor in Basingstoke, the age is 2 years off, but that wouldn't be uncommon, from what I understand. I suspect he went on to marry a Caroline Beale, widow, who he was apparently visiting the day of the Census.

But how can I be sure it is the same person? Is there any other way of verifying that?
How to find someone who was uprooted and turns up again?

Thank you all in advance!

Does the number of children showing on the 1911 census match with what you know.  Is his occupation similar to his previous employment.  The 1919 marriage to Caroline should give his fathers details

To Rosie99:

Yes, in 1911 Caroline appears to be living with her daughter Louise and her family, and Charles is registered as "visitor". His occupation is "bricklayer", which was Charles' occupation in all previous records. That's actually what gave me the idea it might be him, but I don't know how to assert that.

To Comberton:

It is useful, thanks! It strenghtens my theory, even though I still don't see if I'll be able to prove it.

The marriage certificate to Caroline should name his father

Just a silly question... before I spend £11 ordering the marriage certificate at the GRO... is there a way to check if it's the "right" Charles Parker?

Or is that the only way of knowing?

It is not foolproof as he could have named anyone.  I would hate for you to spend £11 and it was wrong.

Did he live near Caroline before he left England.  I see a possible Charles in Pontefract in 1901 - states he is single occ Brick layer

Welcome to RootsChat.
You missed last digit of Charles Parker's birth year in the  title. You can correct it by selecting "Modify".
