I think Charles WORSTALL. Must have been from a military family
I'm connected to his wife
Their son was in air force

Charles siblings were all born in different places .

Thanks for all the detective work .
I wonder if like you said the middle name was inserted in anticipation of the adoption and not a family connection

Poor Thomas had toddler Annie and young Amelia  on his hands too

The following may be of interest.
Listed under Marriages in "The North Eastern Daily Gazette" for Middlesbrough, dated Monday, 3rd August 1885.

"APPLEGARTH - TAYLOR. - On the 3rd inst., at St John's, Middlesbrough, by the Rev. E.O. Herbert, Vicar, Thomas Applegarth to Mary Ann Taylor, both of Middlesbrough."

               Regards,     Dod.

Just a slight correction to #17 - Compositor is associated with PRinting rather than PAinting.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Thanks Dod  for extra information
& Bumble Bee for that last correction
I didn't note the profession of Charles WORSTALL in the censuses I looked at
He was a printers apprentice age 14
* In 1891 he was in army as corporal so proffession not mentioned .

 :) :)

Late again...sorry.

Not that it really matters-but don't you think that it would be very unusual to place an infant with an unmarried 22~yr old male??

Perhaps Caroline WORSTALL (mother of Charles) was the person who agreed to care for Mary Ann.

Yes Maureen that is more likely ." Adopted daughter" was a term used loosely in those days
