John Hodder burial 7 Aug 1783 Ugborough
« on: Thursday 24 March 22 09:45 GMT (UK) »
There is a record for a burial of John Hodder 7 Aug 1783 Ugborough

Are there any clues if this was John Hodder bap 30 Jul 1756 Ugborough
(married Mary Pyne 25 Nov 1781 • Tavistock, Devon) - Mary died in Ugborough 1795

or his father John Hodder bap 30 Dec 1726 Ugborough (married Sarah Crocker, 23 Mar 1754 • Dartmouth, St Saviour, Devon) - Sarah died in 1783 in Ugborough

I'm looking for a burial date for both Johns

thanks

Hi
Not much help but in case you don't have it
Sarah wife of Mr John Hodder buried 25.6.1783
Mr John Hudder buried 7.8.1783
Mary Hodder widow buried 13.3.1795

It would be nice to assume the first two were a couple.

Apparently the gravestones of Sarah Hodder buried 1783 and John buried 1783 have survived and are shown on Find a grave website. I can read Sarah's but I'm struggling to read John's .Depending on their location or you being able to read John's perhaps that would help.

John Hodder
Death Date:   7 Aug 1783
Cemetery:   Saint Peter's Churchyard
Burial or Cremation Place:   Ugborough, South Hams District, Devon

Sarah Hudder
Burial Date:   25 Jun 1783
Cemetery:   Saint Peter's Churchyard
Burial or Cremation Place:   Ugborough, South Hams District, Devon

One tree on Ancestry has John born 1756 married to Mary Pyne 1781 Tavistock, they have a record but I am unable to find it online. They have attributed the 1783 death to this John and attached a record which shows Mr John Hudder, personally I would have thought the addition of the title Mr would lead me to think that was John senior  but as there is no ages on the find a grave records above it will be difficult to prove.

Thanks everyone. I will go with Colin's suggestion. I know it gets tough this far back as records didn't hold a lot of information.

The photo on find-a-grave looks like John's grave is at the back of someone else's grave
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/203266278/john-hodder
I'll go with the theory that it was the older of the two John Hodders
This would be his wife Sarahs grave (with photo)
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/205125921/sarah-hodder

ACTUALLY - if you look closely at Sarah's grave photo you can see the words John Hodder on it as well, so that might challenge that idea. I'm in the antipodes, so can't visit the grave site in person.

thanks again

Hi
Just a thought -have the militia lists for the village survived?
These are supposed to give a list of all men eligiable for military service aged 18-either 45or55.
If John junior was on the list for 1783 but not 1784 you would know it was him who died.
Usually they say what they did for a living ,how many children they have etc.
It's not that they were actually called up but whether they could be so it wouldn't imply they served in the army. Perhaps a look at Devon archives?

Just a thought

Hi Ciderdrinker

A good thought. I checked here
https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Devon_Military_Records

and was only able to access the militia records from Plymouth, not from other areas of the county. Many of the other links are either broken or not relevant (ancestry and FindMyPast) I'm Down Under, so not able to visit any local archives.

Do you know of any other sites I should try where I can access online records of the era from Ugborough?

cheers

Hi
Not sure where it may be online.Perhaps you could try the Devon family history society.
http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/#
They should know whether it has survived and where it might be.
