Kilkenny (and maybe Cork) place name deciphering help needed
« on: Tuesday 29 March 22 19:12 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm struggling with this 1860 marriage record from Tullaroan (Catholic) Parish in Kilkenny.

"Thomas Neary of ?? Parish of Patrick ??
to Julia Quigley of Liss"

Can anyone identify the question marks in Thomas Neary's line?  I believe Liss refers to a Townland in Kilkenny, implying that Julia was local.  But I don't know about Thomas Neary.  TIA!

Bad spelling of Shellumsrath.
Shellumsrath townland in the civil parish of St Patrick's.

Note- it's much better to attach the image as a jpeg.

There's no actual townland called Liss in Co Kilkenny, but Liss was an area to the east of the village of Tullaroan.

First on Google Maps

Then from OpenStreetMap-

Note Lis Cross Roads on the Tullaroan Road.

Here's Tullaroan civil parish (including the townland of Tullaroan).

Interestingly, here's the marriage of a Mary Quigley (who was one of the witnesses at Julia Quigley's marriage). She lived in Liss also and her father was a John Quigley (farmer).

Married at Tullaroan RC Church to Silvester Walsh on 14th August 1866. One of her witnesses was a Judith Quigley (sister?).
