Child deaths from opioid misuse
« on: Monday 04 April 22 11:41 BST (UK) »
It was common throughout the 18thand 19th centuries to give babies "medicine" which contained opium and/or laudanum. Often these were used simply as pacifiers (some brands even had names which made no bones about this, eg Mother Bailey’s Quieting Syrup, Mother’s Quietness, and Street’s Infants’ Quietness.

It was recognised at the time that a large number of infant deaths were caused by opioid usage. A baby could be overdosed as a one-off; or they could regularly be given such medicines to keep them quiet, and simply then not feed as they were asleep, and the appetite was suppressed.

Now I, like everyone else, have come across LOTS of infant deaths in my tree. Has anyone ever found evidence (death certs, inquests, court cases) where this has been shown to have been a factor in a death?
