Any Ship Name Experts…?
« on: Monday 04 April 22 22:04 BST (UK) »
Good evening.
I’m trying to decipher the 2 ship names on the attached. I’ve got Palernian and Messian! I can presume they are wrong as I’m a) going blurry the more I look at them and b) I can’t find any records and details of any ships of those names!!!

For context, these are the names of ‘last served’ Ships. The record dates from April 1915. The 2 people it relates to were in Liverpool.

Thank you!
M

Your guess looks right to me.

A long shot ,but there was a Composer ,Olivier Messiaen ,that spelling might be a bit off!Perhaps the writer wrote as it sounded ,but if copied from documents as it is written would be correct.
Viktoria
P.S, I think it a bit early for Messiaen ,not sure of dates.

I think it's Falernian (not Palernian). The other ship might be the Missanabie?  :-\

I think the second is Nessian. Can't see a port on the extract but if it's also Liverpool that would fit:
https://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/vesselsalpha?shipsearch=NESSIAN&SearchType=Exact&submit=search

There are two Falernians (as suggested by Hillhurst) https://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/vesselsalpha?shipsearch=Falernian&SearchType=Exact&submit=search
Boutflower/Boutflour - Northumberland & County Durham
Branfoot - N Yorkshire, Northumberland & County Durham
Horwell - York, E Yorkshire & Lincolnshire
Bettley - N & W Yorkshire

I think the second is Nessian.

I agree. I can now see the first letter being an "N" (not "M").

Agree with others re the ship names - NESSIAN official number 131467 - Fredk. Leyland & Co. Ltd., Liverpool.
FALERNIAN official number 135597 - Ellerman Lines. the other FALERNIAN's registry was closed in 1912.

Thank you everyone. How I couldn't see 'Palernian' as Falernian' is beyond me!  :D  Makes sense now! Nessian too - of course it's an 'N!'

Genuine thanks to everyone who spent a bit of time to help me out. I try and find out most things for myself but sometimes I need some help from those better informed and better experienced at searching etc!

Thanks again.
