Is there a place called Conchan?
« on: Wednesday 06 April 22 15:59 BST (UK) »
I am in need of a lesson in the geography of the Isle of Man, please.

I have found a relative in the 1851 census in the Isle of Man. I would have deciphered the parish as Onchan or Ouchan, but FindMyPast has transcribed it as Conchan.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

It's both right and wrong

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onchan_(parish)

Quote
Onchan (/ˈɒŋkən/ ONK-ən; Manx: Connaghyn), historically Kirk Conchan, is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man.

Thanks, Gadget.

I still think that FindMyPast has mistranscribed what is actually on the original, but at least unlike some of the more glaring of their legions of errors it's not actually wrong.

It certainly  looks like Onchan to me.

I  find that FindMyPast is usually better than some of the other sites. They do have problems with some of the Welsh names though  :-X  ;D

(I only have 2 relatives born in the Isle of Man)

Yes, they're better than many, but the more I use their transcriptions, the more major errors I come across.

I'm not sure that you should be blaming the transcription. It would appear that the enumerator(s) seem to have written both names.

This same year, same parish~
