Virtues in Newbury Or Surrrounding Area
« on: Thursday 07 April 22 14:26 BST (UK) »
Is anyone here able to check the parish registers for Newbury, Berkshire for the following

A christening for James Virtue/Vertue probably between 1720 and 1736

Any christenings for children of James and Elizabeth Virtue/Vertue between 1756 and 1775

Any christenings for children of John and Sarah Virtue/Vertue between 1784 and 1795

I have the following already

John Virtue son of James and Elizabeth - christened 19 Apr 1757

Jane Virtue dau of John and Sarah - christened 24 Feb 1796

Jane was the daughter of John born 1757.

Does anyone know if the PRs for Newbury can be accessed anywhere online? I am wondering if I have missed any other children and I don't know when/where James was born. James might be related to John Virtue and Elizabeth Butler [a widow] who married by licence at Devizes in 1737. I say this because John and one of the bondsmen [Thomas Virtue] were both weavers, as was John Virtue who married Sarah Chalk. Also Thoms is described as being "of Newbury" so there seems to be a link there.

I'm sure I have missed some people in these records so any help would be wonderfully appreciated.

Many Thanks

Mtthew

Have you referred to genuki?

https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/BRK#ChurchRecords

Thanks for the link. I hadn't seen that website although I've been on it before [not for a while]. Unfortunately I can't see any sign of records for christenings in it. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Did you not read the page and follow the link to parish registers?

The Berkshire baptisms index is at FindMyPast. Check coverage from the dataset description.

Ahh thx. I had a look through the webpage but obviously missed that as I was reading a book at the same yime lol! I didn't see a link but may have missed it as I have only had a briielf look at the page.

Once I get home I can take a more indepth look. If the recirds are on FindMyPast then I will check there first just in case.

Hi

Thanks to all those who've replied here. I've now found the Virtues on FindMyPast, I had completely forgotten to look under the spelling Vertue which was why I hadn't found them before. I did think it odd as I have printed copies of some christenings for the family.

Thankfully I now have all the records I was looking for and now know where to look if I need more info.

Many thanks to all who helped me sort this out

Matt
