Robert Campbell 1828 = Brick Wall, any help greatly appreciated.
« on: Thursday 07 April 22 14:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'd appreciate any help with suggests for the birth place of my relative Robert Campbell.

This is from the 1891 Census and Ancestry.com interpret it as Leunrick, Scotland. But I can't find any such place. My guess is Lerwick, but I'd appreciate any help as I am unable to move forward with researching this branch of my tree.

Thanks,

Hi,

I'm hoping that someone may have information on my relative Robert Campbell born 1828.

Most census returns 1851 + Have his birthplace as Scotland and on the 1891 it states Leunrick, Scotland. Although I cannot find a place name similar in Scotland.

He was married to Jane Stockdale in 1858 and was an iron stone miner in Eston for most of his life.

I have a copy of his marriage certificate and his father is Charles Campbell a farmer.

I'm struggling to find his birth certificate, 1841 census information, etc.

Any help, advise, pointers in where to look next would be appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

I would be inclined to go with Lerwick.  Have you found Robert on any other census records which show his birthplace?

I can't see it being anywhere other than Lerwick.

Or, as a local would say, Lerrr-wick.

I note they married in  Guisborough, North Riding of Yorkshire

1861 New Lackenby, Wilton
CAMPBELL   Robert   Head      33   Iron Miner   Scotland   -
CAMPBELL   Jane           Wife      21      Yorkshire   Ellingstring
CAMPBELL   Charles   Son   -   2      Yorkshire   Lazenby

The only record I can see anywhere in Scotland on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, the only other is 1837.

CAMPBELL   ROBERT   CHARLES CAMPBELL/CATHARINE CARMICHAEL    02/08/1826   Killin, Perthshire

CHARLES CAMPBELL   Married    CATHARINE CARMICHAEL   23/01/1802   Killin

It looks like Charles may have died before 1841, the family are at
 Sombane, Killin, Perthshire

Catharine Campbell a crofter   55
John Campbell   19
Archd Campbell   15
Robt Campbell   13
Catharine Campbell   9

Sadly no death records at Killin prior to statutory registration in 1855.

There are
Lanrick in the parish of Kilmadock http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NN6803
Landrick in the parish of Dunblane http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NN7902
Lendrick Hill in the parish of Fossoway https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NO0103
Lendrick in the parish of Airlie http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NO3550
Lanrick or Lendrick (both spellings occur) in the parish of Callander http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NN5406

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for the name suggestions. I will look into these. I also posted on the handwriting section and a couple of people think it's actually Lerwick. Please see sample form 1891 census attached.
