That's great. Many thanks for taking the time to reply. Let's go with Lerrr-wick and see where that takes us!

Thanks

a couple of people think it's actually Lerwick.
I don't think it is. It's ....rick.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

You could also try Fenwick, Ayrshire.

What age does Robert Campbell give on the census, this should provide an approx DoB?

Hi robwil1966

I was trying to find the family in 1871...just in case Robert's birth gave his birth place in Scotland. All the other censuses are easy enough to find from 1861 onwards.

If you are looking for them on Ancestry, they have been transcribed as Campton  ::) Unfortunately, Robert's birth place also shows just Scotland.

What year was Robert born? Do you know when Robert moved to England?

It looks like 'Lerwick' but my instinct is telling me it is not.

Where was the census taken please?  Just to use it to ponder accents etc.
Is it possible to see a larger snip so we can see how the capital letters for S & I etc were formed.  Or just a larger snip altogether.

Hi,

Many thanks for this. Most of the Census returns 1861+ would put his date of birth as 1828 and his gravestone confirms this.

I have a copy of his marriage certificate and this states his father as Charles a farmer.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

I've attached a larger snip the census was 1891, in Guisborough.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Thanks, for your help. I'd think around 1850, but I'm unsure at this stage.
