Davidson - Mutch - Fraserburgh, Old Deer etc
« on: Friday 08 April 22 08:21 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am reaching out for a Canadian cousin. Looking for relatives who remained in the Fraserburgh area.
Grandparents who left for Canada William M Davidson b 1884 an Isabel Mutch b1880.
  Other names Littlejohn and Thomson
He is coming over to Aberdeenshire in May and would like to meet up with any relatives.

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

From the marriage index at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (SP) William Mair Davidson married Isabella Mutch in Fraserburgh in 1905. Your first step is to register with SP, invest in a few credits, and view that certificate. It will tell you the fulll names of the couple's parents including their mothers' maiden surnames. Then look up their marriages to get the names of the couple's grandparents, and so on.

Tracing living descendants isn't easy online because you can't look at births less than 100 years ago, marriages less than 75 years ago or deaths less than 50 years ago.

Also, one of the rules of RootsChat is that there must be no information about anyone who is or may be alive.

Why not suggest to your Canadian cousin that (s)he writes to the Fraserburgh Herald https://www.fraserburghherald.co.uk/ once you have the names of the older generations?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Forfarian,

Thanks very much, I am very familiar with SP, and have the older generations. I also know how hard it is to make contact with living people. I also understand and appreciate the rules about living people. I was just hoping the might be someone on the forum who I could link up with outside it’s bounds. The other ways I have tried so far have not worked. Thanks for the suggestion, I will perhaps try, the “old fashioned” route you suggest.

Surely there can't be very many people called Mutch in Scotland.  I recall folks of that name who worked for Fullerton's Ironmongers ( now Home Hardware) in Dockhead Street, Saltcoats, North Ayrshire in the 50s and 60s.  There is a possibility they lived above the shop.

There are between 4 to 5 thousand births with the surname Mutch from 1855 to date... ::) Similar number for marriages and deaths (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk)

@Ian, thanks for the Facebook suggestion, I don’t use it mutch! But as for not many, there are 40 Mutches? who are members of that group! Isabel is not in the ONS Mutch list either! Though I may have found someone by building out an Ancestry tree! Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated. Keep it coming   :)
