I'm trying to get my head around too much information. Can anyone suggest a reason why in the 1841 census they rounded down the ages to the nearest 5 ? I get it that they weren't all literate or numerate but it really causes problems when you're looking for an ancestor who you believe was born in 1816, in 1841 his birth year is down as 1811, in the 1851 census his birth year is 1808. I don't know what the purpose would have been. I'm guessing that they never thought about the future either, that possible descendents would be pulling out their hair while looking for them!
