Cannot find Joseph John Reilly in 1901 and 1911 census
« on: Sunday 10 April 22 12:44 BST (UK) »
Joseph John REILLY was born 28 Dec 1880 in Montgomery Street, Carlow, as son of James Reilly (baker) and Ellen Deegan. I think (not sure!) he died as a bachelor on 30 Dec 1951 in Edenberry, Co. Offaly.
I can't find him in the 1901 and 1911 census. He is not with his parents in 1901 and 1911.
Can anyone of you find him in the censuses?

Where are his parents living in 1901/11, Nicolaas?

Is that this family?

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Queen_s_Co_/Turra/Drumagh/787599/

Ellen states she has given birth to 16 children and 11 are still living in 1911.

There is a child Joseph born 1900 with them in 1911

Maybe your Joseph died before 1900.

Ah, I overlooked that count of the still living children. When I count them, I reach 11 living in 1911 only when I assume that Joseph John died before 1911. Thank you for that hint!

However, I fail to find a death for Joseph John Reilly in 1880-1911. I noticed that rootsireland.ie does not have deaths for Carlow in that time interval. Could that explain why I cannot find the death?

You should be able to find it here
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

I can’t see the 1951 death you refer to and that should be there too.

At first, I thought that it might be two different families but looking at births, it isn’t.

James was a Baker in Carlow but then is a farmer. Perhaps he took over a family farm around 1900?

I also wondered if Joseph could be known as John?

Maybe through https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ you could find the sixteen children and then the 5 deaths. It would take time.

Yes, I found the (probably wrong) death on the name John: died 13 Dec 1952 Edenderry, Co. Offaly. Age 71, labourer, bachelor.

I will go through the 16 children  (but not today).

Thank you for your helpful suggestions!

Here is a death for Thomas 1879
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1879/06515/4876638.pdf

There is a birth and then a later child, Thomas in 1901 census.

Elizabeth died 1886
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1886/06240/4786412.pdf

Michael 1894 - there is a birth for this chikd and a later one was also named Michael
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1894/05975/4698861.pdf

Now that is only 3 children and easily identified as ‘Baker’s child’ and births.

It might be that Joseph emigrated?
