Workhouse Query
« on: Monday 11 April 22 01:56 BST (UK) »
I have a few questions regarding workhouses in Lancashire, most likely those in Bury, Burnley, Bolton and Rochdale, although other areas might also be possibilities.

I'm following 15 year old Alice Howarth who arrived in Port Chalmers, NZ in 1874. Her name might have been Margaret Alice Howarth or Alice Margaret Howarth. I appreciate her age of 15 mightn't be completely accurate but this would suggest a date of birth around 1858-1859. According to GRO UK, there is an Alice Howarth b. Sept quarter in the Burnley Union with no maiden name for the mother. There is another Alice Howarth b Nov 5 1861 Bolton Union. Were both of these children born in a workhouse? The 1861 birth is outside of my search area, but might work is the girl on the passenger list said she was 15 but was younger. The only Margaret Alice Howorth I can find is 1859, mother's maiden name Nuttall b. Elton, Bury.

Would appreciate any and all help with thanks in advance.
Glenda

Where does the possibility of 2 forenames come from?   Also, how do you know she came from Lancashire and a workhouse?   Tell us all you know to enable us to try and help you.

Presumably your query relates to this thread?

If your person of interest is the Alice Margaret HOWARTH who died aged 24 in 1891, doesn't this mean she was born c1867? As Annette says, how do you know she was born in Lancashire - does it say that on the death certificate? Is there any other information on the certificate that may help?  :)

Alice Howarth, registered September quarter 1860 - Burnley Union - this does not necessarily mean that Alice was born in the Workhouse, as Burnley Union is the name of the Registration District which covers a number of locations.  Even if she was born in the Workhouse it must be remembered that the Workhouse would possibly be the only location for a hospital.

Hello
There are 3 Alice Howarths emigrating to NZ in 1874 on Familysearch
This looks like them Dunfillan Otago 1874
Alice Howarth 62 Lancashire
Elizabeth 34 weaver
Alice 15
There passage cost 79 2 and they seem to be going to Southland?
I Don't know the set up of the records so I'm not sure what they were asked.
