Note on Birth Entry
« on: Tuesday 12 April 22 04:35 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
My 2nd cousin was born in 1911, in Killarney. Her parents were not married. Her father is listed and cross out with a (1) beside it and there is a notation beside the entry. It looks like one W. H. D.

Looking further down the document, W H Dodd is the register but it doesn't explain the 'one' / (1)  any thoughts?

I have put the link to the page here for reference to the registrar.

It would just be the first ammendment made by the registrar in that quarter (or year, I am not sure).  The next ammendment to a registration would be numbered 2.

The father's name has been scored out as he wasn't present.

The (1) is to signify an error i.e. the annotation with 'one'/1 is the registrar's initials to state he'd made the error.

If any other errors had occurred on the entry they'd be marked (2), (3) etc.

Thanks for your help, Annie and Debra.  Sorry about not putting the name/reference.  Initially, I had uploaded the relevant snip but realised that didn't show the registrar's details, so I put the link, not thinking to then add Hannah's name.

And just to back up the explanation if you look on the next page you will see errors Number (2) and (3) on the sixth entry of Daniel Horgan's birth with W H Ds initial of words two and three at the side.

The records are listed 1 to  500.
One W.H.D.   =   new list starting at number 1 he initialled it.

Although a new list beginning no. 1, had there not been an error he'd have had no reason to initial it.

If the 1st error had occurred on entry no. 5 it would have been given (1) to signify it was the 1st error?

It's clear from the printed text at the top and bottom of the page that this is part of a quarterly return of births sent to the General Register Office of Ireland at the end of the March quarter 1911.

The numbers in the LH column are those of the entries in the original register book(s), and it just so happens that Hannah Finn's was the first entry in a new book. Corrections to entries are numbered sequentially through each book, so as Hannah's needed one, this was (1). To answer Annie's question, if the first error had been on entry no.5, it would still have been (1). I've also occasionally seen an entry with several corrections, each numbered separately.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
