LaVerne Hall McKinney KIA
« on: Tuesday 12 April 22 13:06 BST (UK) »
Trying to locate any additional information would be helpful and appreciated in trying to Locate my great uncle's final resting place.

So far all I have been able to find is this following

LaVerne Hall McKinney

Service number 2025275

Born August 1, 1894

KIA August 9, 1918  While on duty in a support trench South of Caix, France  I am let to believe based on past death notice received by his family,

he was buried near to the spot he fell, however never received any additional information as to where that grave site is located.

His name is listed on the Vimy Memorial

Served with the Canadian 7th Batallion CEF

As he is listed on the Vimy Memorial this would mean that he has no known grave.

There are a number of reasons for this including that he was initially buried but his temporary grave became lost in subsequent fighting. This happened to many, many soldiers that were KIA

I searched the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website which details only the data you already possess.

I presume that you already have a copy of his complete Canadian service record, which runs to 42 pages.

https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=160940

The war diary of the 7th Infantry Battalion covering the relevant period is also online at the Canadian Archives. Pages 236 and 237 cover operations on 8/9 August 1918, I presume he is one of the three other ranks noted as being killed.

As I continue my search for additional information regarding my Great Uncle Pvt LaVerne Hall McKinney service number 2025275 who was killed in action near Caix, France  August 9, 1918 .  He served with the 7th Battalion ( 1st British Columbia)  His name is listed on the Vimy Memorial.

From what I have read in my research to date.  I believe he fought in the Battle of Amiens.  Possibly the Battle of Hatchet Wood.  But not 100% sure.  I have reviewed war dairies but unable to nail anything down as a fact.  At this point all I have is an assumption.

Any additional information one might have would be appreciated

Thanks For your help

Are my assumptions correct?  Are there other sites that would have additional information that would confirm my assumptions?   or confirm additional facts or new facts?    This is what I have determined so far

He fought in the Battle of Amiens.  Possibly the Battle of Hatchet Wood.  But not 100% sure.

Thanks Dave

You have his full service record and have been given the page numbers from the relevant war diary covering the date that he was killed, with the war diary noting that three other ranks were killed in that action, one of who must be your great uncle. The war diary isn't going to mention other ranks by name, so if you're looking for some form of smoking gun that states that Pvt LaVerne Hall McKinney was killed in action on this date, at this time, and on this spot, it's going to be a long and ultimately fruitless search. All you can do is look at the evidence that you already have, and then consider the balance of probabilities.

Can Please provide the link to that diary?

Thank You Dave
