Jarvis Marriage in Gibraltar?
« on: Sunday 04 September 05 07:58 BST (UK) »
Is this the right place to ask for some help? I hope so. If not please tell me. But anyway here goes.... ;D
William Jarvis was born 20.5.1844 on Gibraltar. (I have his birth cert.) His parents were William and Johanna Jarvis.  Both Williams were in the Royal Artillery but I need to find a marriage for William and Johanna. (Different spellings of her name). POSSIBLY in Gibraltar.
William Snr born in UK. and Johanna born in Spain.  I don't know her maiden name or anything else about her except on the  1881 Census. I cannot find a death for William or Johanna either.
Thank you for ANY help.
Fellow-Rootschatter.

Dear Annie
Firstly, thank you for your reply ;D
The only things thatr I know about William Sne. are:
He was born approx. 1817 UK.
On his sons (William) birth cert. in Gibraltar in 1844 he was stated as being a "Gunner & Driver".
From the 1881 Census taken at Elizabeth Castle, St Aubins Fort, St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands he was stated as an Army Pensioner (Military Store Keeper) age 64 and hid wife Johanna was 60.
William  did not appear on the 1891 Census.
William Snr was with his son at the time of the 1881 Census.
William Jnr and wife moved around a lot.  According to 1881 Census, 2 children born in Melbourne, Australia, one in Ceylon, one in England, one in Guernsey, one in Scotland, then last 3 in Jersey, Channel Islands.
William Snr seems to have died between 1881 and 1891 but I can't find any record of this.
Any help would be wonderful.
I have more info. on William Jnr. if you want that.
Many thanks
Kathleen :D

Dear Casalguidi
This could very well be possible.  The ages are right and the places seem appropriate.  I don't know any of William Jrn's siblings, so this will be something to explore.  I will follow up on what you have sent me.  Thank you so much.  ;D ;D

Birth in Gibraltar of British Subject.
« Reply #7 on: Saturday 17 September 05 09:27 BST (UK) »
Hi All ;D
I sent a post on 6th Sept. about my Jarvis family and received some wonderful help.  I thank you.  I still have a very difficult problem and don't know how to go about my search with the little info. I have.      ??? ???
I need to find a marriage in Gibraltar in approx. 1843. The husband, William Jarvis, was in the Royal Artillery and he married Johanna ? who was born in Spain aprox. 1821  but was a British Subject.  So her father was obviously in the British Forces as well.
How can I access records of the Royal Artillery who were married or born outside England??????
THANKS FOR ANY HELP.
Dying in frustration

Hi Kathleen

Have you tried the overseas registers at the Family Records Centre, London or online http://www.1837online.com (pay per view)?

Can you be sure that they married in Gibraltar?
