This could be him. If so, it explains the differences between the UK Departure list and the ship's manifest. And it puts him in the US by about 1887 or so. I think you had to wait a couple years before you could declare your intention to become a citizen.

That is interesting that the article mentioned that Thomas had relatives in California. I will have to look into that as I have only started to look into his family and so far I really only know about Thomas parents, siblings and his sister Mary who was my 3rd great grandmother.

From what those documents say, it looks like it could be him also.Going by his age, if correct, he would have been born 1856. I see if I can get access to the various churches baptism records for the area where he was born and find out if he was baptised in any of them which, if so will tell me his age then.
