Brick Wall
« on: Thursday 14 April 22 11:10 BST (UK) »
Hello,

In 1704, Humphrey Knill married Mary Best at Bishopsteignton, Devon.

There are several possible candidates for Mary Best. However, I am more interested in Humphrey Knill.

There are two Humphrey Knills, baptised at Tawstock, Devon in the records.

The one baptised in 1687 would have been too young to marry in 1704 (I think) - unless someone knows differently.

His uncle, baptised in 1661, is likely to have been a bit too old, I would have thought.

I can't find any others, unless someone else can help me out , please.

Thanks,

Gordon

Thanks.

I have seen that, and I think it was the husband of Katherine.

They had four children:

Katherine (1651 -), John (1654 - ), Rachell (1656 - ) and Humphrey (1661 - ) all at Tawstock.

I can't find their marriage. I imagine that Katherine was likely to have been the earliest birth.

Gordon.

Hello
I looked at the parish records of Bishopsteignton and it looks like a settled family all from the same parish. There seems to be 3 brothers
Humphrey and Mary married 1704 carpenter
John and Joanne Hopper widow married 2.12.1697 brother of Joseph on the marriage record
Joseph married Mary Bickford d of John 24.10.1697

And the baptisms seem to back that up.(It's the script that's putting people off ,they are all transcribed/indexed  without a surname but  are  - illl).

John 14.11.1669 s of Henry and Sidwell Nill
Joseph s of Henry Nill 16.1.1671
Bartholemew 25.1.1673 s of Henry and Sidwell Nill
Humphrey 17.9.1776 s of Henry and Sidwell Nill
Elizabeth 27.6.1680 d of Henry and Sidwell

They married at Winkleigh 26.10.1668 Henrie Knoll and Sidwell (the transcription says Snell but ??).

Sydwell widow buried 16.8.1713 leaving a Will which probably hasn't survived
Henry Will 1682
John Will 1731
Mary 1749  (Mary wife of Humphrey buried 1.4.1747.

I know it makes him 28 when he married but that's not really that old.

Just thought I'd add the Bests

Mary is either bapt 19.6.1679 d of John And Susanna or 22.10.1687 d of George and Ann nee Coyle married 29.11.1684.

As there are 2 marriages yours 1704 and 4.12.1715 Mary Best to john Bawden,I'd go for the earlier one to John and Susanna.
In any case her grandparents are Richard and Mary Best as the 2 men are brothers.

John bapt 26.2.1653 and George 20.7.1663.
Siblings
 Gawing  a son 8.9.1647 -2.1.1667
Joanne buried 11.2.1661
Bartholomew buried 17.3.1763
Roger buried 7.6.1774

A Will for Richard 1681 bur again probably hasn't survived.

That's brilliant, thanks very much!

I had noticed that the surname was occasionally spelt 'Nill', but hadn't come across Humphrey.

28 seems fine to me. I usually think in terms of 25 +/- 5.

Winkleigh is also interesting, as I was looking to tie them up with some Knills who came from Holsworthy.

Your  work is much appreciated,

Gordon

Although I hadn't given much attention to Mary Best, I was thinking along the lines of daughter of John and Susanna, which seemed to be the best fit with other names in the family.

Thanks,

Gordon

In 1629, John Knill married Miss White at Ilfracombe.

Searching on Findmypast, with the alternative box ticked on the surname, two sons came up with parents John and Elizabeth:

Robert 'Knowell' 1630 at Ilfracombe; Henrie 'Knowell' 1631 at Ilfracombe.

Elizabeth White was baptised at Braunton in 1605.
There were several John Knills baptised in the area around 1600.

The spelling 'Knowell' is not dissimilar to 'Nuell' on the 1668 marriage.

Kind regards,

Gordon
