COMPLETED Look up at Newcastle Archives or FHS please.
« on: Thursday 21 April 22 15:47 BST (UK) »
If anyone is visiting Newcastle Archives or Family History Society, I wonder if you could please carry out a search for me for the marriage of John Amos and Elizabeth Gray on 31st May 1762 at St. John Lee, Hexham.
I am hoping to find the father's of both bride and groom and the names of any witness'.
Thank you in anticipation.
Erin

I see you have been searching for this John Amos for a long time!
Previous post here from 2009

Unfortunately, St John Lee marriages are still only on fiche on familysearch, and not yet digitised.
I think it's unlikely you will find any names of parents on a marriage entry from 1762
The film of the Bishop's transcripts is locked, which means you can only view it at an LDS library, but it's unlikely to include any parents' names anyway.

Have you tried contacting the Newcastle Archives?
I've always found record offices very helpful.

Have you found the birth of his wife Elizabeth Gray?
Her father may have left a will. You never know what information might be in a will.
There is a North East Inheritance database on the Durham university site which is very helpful.
There do not seem to be any Amos wills on it, but lots of wills of the name Gray/Gray.

If John Amos was born in 1727, as you state on your other post, he would have been 35 years old by this marriage of 1762. Have you discovered if he was married before this?

The marriage is transcribed at Durham Records Online (very modest cost to access).

In my experience these transcripts usually state witnesses' names. As has been said, you're very unlikely to get fathers' names.

Thank you for your reply Goldie.
Records from St. John Of Beverley, St. John Lee of births 1669-1961, Marriages 1664-1983 and Burials 1664-1984 are held at the Newcastle Archives and NDFHS have a transcript of marriages 1684 to 1851.
I have just been informed that transcripts from St. John Lee of Births, Marriages and Deaths from 1664 to 1812 are held at Newcastle Central Library.
Obviously I do not know exactly what information these records contain.

I actually stopped looking for John Amos around around 10 years ago and have only recently come back to this line so I have by no means exhausted the records which may be available.
I think John may of been married before but again the research into this line was halted so I am just looking into this again now. I really need to get to the Archives or Library myself but this may take a while as I am in poor health at the moment.

I have started to look at the link you kindly sent re Wills.
Thank you once again for your help.
 :)

Thank you so much for this Bookbox  :)
This is absolutely fantastic and will be such a great help to me for all kinds of records.
I just never thought of using Durham On Line for records in Northumberland.
Thank you again.
