Gameson name distribution map
« on: Saturday 23 April 22 17:01 BST (UK) »
I believe I saw a map ages ago, on the Internet, showing the main areas where the GAMESON (or GAMSON) surname was located. I have traced my Gameson forebears back to Monmouthshire in 1799, but beyond that the trail goes cold. Can anyone point me to the map I think I once saw? (Or make other suggestions!)

This map is especially helpful and easy to read, but I don't quite understand the numbers. For example, for Gameson, it gives 0 in 1841 and 8 in 1851 for Monmouthshire. But the Gamesons arrived in the area around 1800 and began to produce children as early as 1799 . What do the figures 0 and 8 actually mean? Are they the real total of actual entries for that surname, or are they in some way notional (e.g. a percentage, or on a scale of frequency from, say, 0 to 100)?

I also notice that the surname Gamson is fairly common in Monmouthshire in 1841 (score: 22). This seems to be a variant spelling in those far-off days. Is there any way of taking account of variant spellings? For example another line I am tracing is variously Wild, Wilde, and Wyld.
