Birth registration of John APPLETON with second given name, Johnson, should be of interest in your research.

It would suggest that there is JOHNSON family in the BRANNIGAN or APPLETON ancestry.

Similarly, you might hope that other children, siblings of John Johnson APPLETON, might also have a useful second given name.

What names and birthplaces do you have for the children of this APPLETON-BRANNIGAN family, beyond the 1841 and 1851 Census.

Do you see any baptisms in Scotland?

The Census, 1851, shows a suspicious gap between Jane 9y, and John 8mts. Were there children born 1842-1849?

"I have done extensive research into the Appleton’s in Sunderland"  -

Can you account for the later life of the APPLETON-BRANNIGAN children that I see on family trees, Ancestry.

Let me first thank all of you for your assistance with this question. I assume you are all cognizant with
Northern Ireland. Now let me answer your questions-

As Hayward mentioned, information provided by Ellen about her birthplace was inconsistent.
Isn't County Monaghan in Ireland? Oh, you're referring to the 1851 census.

Who else was with Ellen in 1841?
Peter Branigan
Mary Branigan
John Branigan
William Branigan
Sarah Branigan
Helen Appleton
Sarah Appleton
Agnes Appleton
Thomas Appleton

Did the household include any of her parents & other siblings?
No

Was the nephew in U.S. Peter's son?
Not sure. I know I've seen a record somewhere. I'm going to have to look through all of the Brannigan family records. I'll get back to you on that...

Have you found Peter on U.S. censuses?
Yes

What do you know about Peter?
Born about 1811
Plasterer
Immigrated to U.S? 15th January 1850
1860 U.S. census has Peter, Mary and Patrick living in Brooklyn, New York

Was he older or younger than Ellen?
Older. Ellen born about 1816/1817

Do you know Ellens religious denomination?
No

There are only Helen and Thomas’ names of the marriage certificate.  Remember, this is 1834.
I have noticed that in the earlier records, marriage and 1841 census, she is referred to as Helen; however, in all the later records her name changes to Ellen.  All assistance with anything regarding Helen Brannigan in Ireland would be SO much appreciated.

Thank you all for your assistance. 👍😀

Thank you.  :)
Yes County Monaghan is in Ireland - not sure why you mention ‘Northern Ireland’ though as at the time it was all the one country. Monaghan is in the province of Ulster but is in the Republic of Ireland.
There was much migration between Ulster and Scotland though.

I am not familiar with Scottish registers and was hoping that witnesses were shown as in English marriages. :-\

There is some consistency as she shows her birth as Scotland in all censuses except 1841 where perhaps Peter gave all the information.
It may well be that she was born in Ireland but raised in Scotland and thought she was born there.

As heywood has mentioned about 'Monaghan is in the province of Ulster but is in the Republic of Ireland', here's a map of the four provinces and their respective counties.

Researching: Cuthbertson – Co. Derry, Scotland & Australia; Hunter – Co. Derry; Jackson – Co. Derry, Scotland & Canada; Scott – Co. Derry; Neilly – Co. Antrim & USA; McCurdy – Co. Antrim; Nixon – Co. Cavan, Co. Donegal, Canada & USA; Ryan & Noble – Co. Sligo

Thank you!  I aught to have reviewed the different counties in Ireland 🤪

Good thinking Hayward.  She may well have believed she was born in Scotland.  As Peter’s eldest son was born in Ireland, I had assumed, or perhaps presumed, that Peter and Ellen were raised in Ireland.  Your suggestion opens up a new doorway.

If you have time, would you check your US information re Peter please.
The one I am looking at here seems to be linked to family trees with Peter and Mary Malone.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K6W9-BMY

However, the son Patrick b 1836 Scotland does not appear in 1841 and the children from 1841 are not on the census. The trees I have seen, seem to just have details re Patrick.

Then there is a daughter Catherine born abt 1835, County Louth, Ireland who dies in 1906 (record states County ‘South’
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WFK-KL3

This is perhaps the wrong family?

I am just trying to see if there is any useful info there.

I have forebears with a Brannigan name that has been found with spellings such as Bannigan, Banigan, Branigan and also Buchan and Buchanan (!)

We think the name is the current Brannigan/Bannigan and the family came from Co Donegal.  Married in Co Londonderry.

The reason for the post is to warn not to be fixed on spellings as many names were not fixed and also clergy/registrars were often hearing accents they were not used to.....be especially cautious/careful with records from Scotland or the US.  I resorted to listening to an Irish accent from the place they were from and then imagined myself being a Registrar or Immigration official being confronted with the accent.....what did I hear? and wrote it as I heard it.

Have you looked at the William Branaghan, age 30 living in Port Glasgow in 1841 census? A possible brother?
