Thank you for your replies. On his army discharge papers, it says that he was born in the parish of Carlow, in the town of Carlow, County of Carlow and enlisted in the same. However, I have an open mind as to whether this is true. Yes, Thomas was in 1841 census in London with his wife and children. I believe he was Protestant because his son (my ancestor) was.

Modified to add: in the 1841 census he just states that he was born in Ireland.

It's likely that he enlisted close to home.
Did he survive until 1851 census when he would have been able to put a more specific birthplace than Ireland?

Yes, he died in 1867 but we haven’t found him in the 51 or 61 census. There are many spelling errors though. He is in the electoral roll as Thomas Main (St George Hanover Square) but that obviously doesn’t detail where he is from.
