Samuel Elves born in Portugal
« on: Tuesday 26 April 22 15:03 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am researching a man named Samuel Elves, born c1796 'at sea' - possibly in Portugal?

He married Christiana Edwards in Tower Hamlets, London on the 16th August 1829, before returning to Whitby, North Yorkshire, were Christina was born.
At this point he was a merchant seaman.

The family then relocated to Old Quarrington/Coxhoe in Durham where Samuel worked as a labourer, but continued to indicate that he had ben a former seaman.
He died in Tudhoe in 1876.

Can anybody give me any advice as to where I could trace a baptism for him?

Many Thanks
Sue

If at census records he says "at sea" from where does Portugal come?

A baptism doesn't have to take place in the place of birth or at the time of birth; if his family were briefly in Europe and then came back they may have had him baptised in England a couple of years later, for example.

Hi

He gives his place of birth as Portugal on the 1861 census (Portugal - British subject) and 1871 census (Portugal).
The 1851 census (at sea).

Thanks
Sue

Samuel Alves of Whitby on this 1836 mariner record: https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=TNA%2FBT120%2F2132508553%2F1

Though per the census records he was a British Subject so not Portuguese.
