Excuse my ignorance but what is BNA

Apologies, BNA is the British Newspaper Archives site, same newspapers also available on Find My Past, but the BNA can be searched for free, you need a sub or to pay for full results but in this case the snippet gave the full info.

That transcript is a great help RTL :-)

As Austen's father is also listed as a 'Master Mariner' on the marriage record, there is a Master's cert for a John Scott, born in 1805, Cullercoats, cert was issued (as a renewal) in 1852 and says he'd been a Master in the foreign trade for 10 years.

Birth place would match (the birth year is a year out, but that's within acceptable parameters?) with what ciderdrinker posted in reply 6.

I have added marriage as a postem on Freebmd but it probably won't show for up to 24 hours
