Date of enlistment into the York & Lancaster Regiment
« on: Thursday 28 April 22 18:25 BST (UK) »
I have a soldier, Richard Monks, who was Private 10429 in the York & Lancaster Regiment.

Would anyone know when he would have enlisted ?
I have a rough date of 1913-14, but could anybody narrow that down ?

He arrived in France, 9 Sep 1914 with the 2nd Y&L's.
Was wounded in March (?) 1915.
Served with the 9th Y&L's and was wounded a second time in Feb 1916.
Later served with the 16th Y&L's.
Transferred to the 23rd Labour Coy, Labour Corps in May 1917.
Transferred back to the Y&L's in 1919.

I've found awards of the 1914 Star, BWM, VM and 2 wound stripes.
But no Silver War Badge for some reason.
And, unfortunately, no Pension Record which might have allowed his enlistment to be calculated.

For what it's worth, the Y&L men with service numbers 10428 and 10430 both enlisted in 1913.

Sorry, no I don't know the dates. But the various records are on FindMyPast, if you have a subscription (which I don't have anymore). Perhaps the service records are on Ancestry? I haven't looked.

If it helps, here are the names plus two more:

George Jollands
Birth 1893
Year 1913
Service number 10430
York And Lancaster Regiment
Birth county Lincolnshire

Arthur Turner
Birth 1894
Year 1913 (also a record dated 1910)
Service number 10428
York And Lancaster Regiment
Birth county Lancashire

William Gillott
Birth 1895
Year 1913
Service number 10425
York And Lancaster Regiment
Birth county Yorkshire

George Henry Johnson
Birth 1893
Year 1913
Service number 10432
York And Lancaster Regiment
Birth county Yorkshire

Richard Monks would not have a Silver war Badge because he was not discharged due to being wounded, he served until 1919 at least. The badge was issued to those who were discharged due to wounds so that civilians did not think they were cowards who had not joined up.

Good stuff. At least its provided a rough indication that your man may have enlisted in 1913, as well.
