This couple married in 1907, and in light of the buttonhole worn by the woman, I wondered if it was a wedding photo.

Whilst I know the dress isn't necessarily black - it could be any dark colour in this b&w photo - I had thought that it was customary for brides to wear white/light colours following Queen Victoria's fashion setting?

Or perhaps this is a posed photo of the couple as guests at a wedding, not their own?
A date would help to pin it down.

Not a particularly affluent family, but in a secure job - by 1911 the man was a Signal Fitter for the GWR.

Lovely photo, I think their marriage date would fit, My Grandparents were married in 1904 and she too wore a dark coloured dress, not a very wealthy couple so it could just have been her one good Sunday best dress.

It does look as if it could be a marriage photo, as Carol says.

Is it possible to do a larger scan of just her left hand to see if there might be a ring, please.

That's a very good point about a ring, Gadget - but this is a reproduction of a photo sent to me so unable to take a better scan at present, not sure where the photo actually is.

One other thing I thought about whether it was a marriage photo, is that although the couple are just about touching on the same arm of the chair, it's not a very intimate pose is it. 

Normally you'd man with hand on woman's shoulder or something closer.  Or is that just me`?

Thank you, Japeflakes - doesn't look like there is a ring, from your blow-up of my original - will see if I can get a look at the photo itself to scan the hand area in more detail.

I think that I can see  a faint bump! on the inside of the bottom knuckle that could be a ring

She does look to be holding her left hand in a way that would show off a ring.
