Ancestors’ Locales that make you smile
« on: Monday 02 May 22 14:14 BST (UK) »
My favourite ancestral place name is Giggleswick in W. Yorkshire.

My grandparents settled in Valleyfield, Quebec which I think is a pretty name for a town.

On the outskirts of Blackburn, Lancashire, is Pleasington, now home to a large cemetery and crematorium. I thought that name was likely to be a Victorian invention dreamed up by a property developer.

It turns out to go back all the way to the Norman period.

...but the Normans were well into property development too.  ;D
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

When researching family history on my Father's side, I went to St. John's Nfld to meet cousins and there were many place names that made me smile, Conception Bay, Placentia, "Come by Chance" and Dildo, I had to check a second time to see if I had read it right  ;D

My ancestors lived in places with boring names.  The only name that stands out is Brave Boat Harbor, Maine - a safe, snug place to anchor your boat if you were brave enough to navigate through the narrow, rocky entrance.
Wiltshire:  Banks, Taylor
Somerset:  Duddridge, Richards, Barnard, Pillinger
Gloucestershire:  Barnard, Marsh, Crossman
Bristol:  Banks, Duddridge, Barnard
Down:  Ennis, McGee
Wicklow:  Chapman, Pepper
Wigtownshire:  Logan, Conning
Wisconsin:  Ennis, Chapman, Logan, Ware
Maine:  Ware, Mitchell, Tarr, Davis

Not to mention Heart’s Desire …and from a Newfoundland song we used to sing in school - Pogo and Twillingate.

My mother lived in an actually planned town in Sussex - Peacehaven.  A very nice name I always thought.
