There is a Florence Annie Attwood listed as living at 56 Linnell Road in Camberwell on the 1911 Census. Born in 1883 which would have made her 21 at the time Constance was born. Wonder if this could be the same person? In 1911 she's listed as single and living at home with her parents and brother.

She marries in 1914 to John Henry Albert Panning.  She is 34 spinster.  Could be her.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire

8 Kemble Road Croydon - no Florence Atward at that address 1901/11
1901 census the Conquest family

July/August 1907 - Mrs Conquest still connected to 8 Kemble Road (as per the classifieds in the Croydon Guardian and Surrey County Gazette).

In 1901, there's a Pvt Conquest also connected to the address. He's probably the following:

Name: Charles Conquest
Born: 1881
Year: 1901
Location: St Johns, Croydon, Surrey
Service number: 7546
Regiment: Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment)

Looks like he served in the Boer War. His service record is on FindMyPast.

Was she adopted by Ernest Saunders & Florence nee Bycroft?

In 1921 Constance is with Florence's sister Fanny and her husband Fred GOODAIRE (mistranscribed as GOODACRE).

In the 1911 census, why is Constance's surname "Steward"?  :-\

How is Fanny Goodaire (nee Bycroft) Florence Atward's sister?

The 1911 census indicates Florence Saunders birthplace as Brighouse, Yorks. Yet the 1921 census has Lincoln for Fanny Goodaire's birthplace.

And does this mean Florence Saunders (1911 census) is really Constance's mother? If so, shouldn't we be looking for mum Florence in the Brighouse area prior to 1904?

The Florence I was referring to was Florence SAUNDERS nee BYCROFT.  Fanny GOODAIRE nee BYCROFT was her sister.

Gotcha. So we have the Bycroft sisters - Florence and Fanny. (So many Florence's to keep track of).  ::)

I'm relying on the FS record (not the image) for the 1911 census. That's what incorrectly lists "Steward".
Can't view images as I don't have Ancestry or FindMyPast subs.

I wonder how young Constance ended up in Yorkshire, considering she was from Croydon? Is there a backstory there?

Emily - As Constance was Croydon-born, I'm wondering if she was placed with either The Mission of Hope and The Homeless Children’s Aid and Adoption Society (HCAAS). They were also known as Christian Family Concern, and were Croydon-based.

Their adoption files were transferred to Croydon Council circa 1992. (“Adoptions” before 1926, and in some cases later, were more akin to fostering. Potential adopters had to show that they were practising Christians. One of their references had to be from the Church which they attended).

These links provide information and guidance regarding adoption file access:
