Harris daughters in North Wootton
« on: Wednesday 04 May 22 07:57 BST (UK) »
Hello,
In the 1911 census, my ancestor William Harris (b1853) and his wife Sarah (nee Barrett, b1850) were living in North Wootton, near Sherborne. The entry states the couple had 7 children, three of whom had died.
I have worked out those who had passed were son Henry Richard (b and d1885) and daughters Ann (b1877) and Elizabeth (b1882).
I believe the two daughters were both born in Somerset (Seavington St Mary near Ilminster) but cannot find any details as to when or where they died. They were both living with their parents in the 1891 census (Whitelackington, Somerset) but neither were at home in 1901 (Clapton, Somerset), nor have I found them anywhere else.
Would anyone have any advice or guidance on how to solve the mystery of the missing daughters, please?
Thank you.

They married in 1875 - children could have been born & died between censuses.

You need to check GRO online for Harris/Barrett births then compare to census entries

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Have you checked for marriages for them?  Ann was b 1877 & Elizabeth 1882 so both could have married before 1901

I notice the 1891 has Sarah’s mother as Parrett & coincidentally - GRO online has Elizabeth’s birth reg in 1882 with mmn Parrett

Thanks for this.

I've found no obvious marriages for either of them, no.

Quote
and daughters Ann (b1877) and Elizabeth (b1882).

Just to clarify these are the 2 daughters that have died before 1911?

As Carole suggests you can look on the GRO index for deaths between 1891 and 1901 to start with.

Use the area they were living in 1891 to start with.

Think this narrows down timeline for Elizabeth.

Herewith an update on my search:

I've found a death certificate for a Bessie Harris who died in June 1906, aged 24.

She was a spinster domestic servant who died in the Workhouse in Cardiff of Eclampsia (which I found out that occurs during pregnancy).

It's difficult to 100% confirm this is the girl that I was looking for as there's no identifying family information but if it is her, it's a terribly sad story.
