Richard Aldred b c1814 Atherton. Looking for parents
« on: Wednesday 04 May 22 17:40 BST (UK) »
Hi looking for parents of a Richard Aldred b c 1814 Atherton Lancashire. He married Alice Gerrard in 1842 in Wigan. I have the marriage but no father wrote down. He's with Alice on the 1851 census in West Leigh but I cannot find him on the 1841 census.
All replies much appreciated.

Have you checked Family Search or Lancs OPC?  No father usually indicates he was illegitimate

Yes there are quite a few Richards for that area and year. I had one before with father blank but he was found to have died before the sons marriage so they left him off the marriage cert

I've just had a look on the Lancashire link you gave me and there is a Richard Alleged born 1814 Atherton, mother Mary Allred.  I think this must be him. He had a child called Mary so it fits in. Thankyou.

A possible baptism if he was illegitimate.
26 Feb. 1814 Protestant Dissenters' Chapel, Chowbent, Atherton
Born 11th January. Mother Mary Aldred. Abode Atherton.
Aldred seems to have been a common surname in Atherton.

A Richard Aldred of Atherton you can probably eliminate is the one who married Margaret Harrison at St. Mary, Leigh in 1841. His father was Peter.

Added. Correction. 1814 baptism was Allred.

Thanks that's the one I found on the Lancashire site but it said Allred.

Some surname variants. Aldred, Alldred, Allred, Alred.
Monumental inscriptions at Chowbent Chapel. Some of the Aldred/Alldred &c. entries may help you work out relationships. Also burial register.

Transcription & index of 1841 census for Atherton
www.lan-opc.org.uk/Atherton/census/index.html
Transcription & index of 1831 census is there too. 1831 census recorded names heads of households only.

Richard's abode was Hindley when he married at Wigan in 1842.

Sorry. My mistake. I had Aldred in my mind.
