Walter Oakley- what medals did he get?
« on: Saturday 07 May 22 08:42 BST (UK) »
I am helping a friend with his grandad's ancestry.
He served in the Royal Fusiliers in WW1.
My friend knows he got some medals ,but we cannot work out which.

Can anyone help with what the writing in red to the right hand side says here, and does that tell you what medals he got?

Many thanks

Carol

The document is the medal roll of soldiers entitled to the Victory medal and the British War medal.

As well as those two standard WW1 medals, he was awarded the Military Medal when serving with 26th Battalion.

The writing in red is a reference to Para 992 Kings Regulations re custody of medals

His MIC has only his first service number, 780, 10th (Stockbrokers) Battalion.

It shows that he also had the 1914/15 Star

I am surprised that it mentions him as being of Toronto.
He was born near Manchester on 25 Feb 1893,and married there in 1928.

Many thanks for what you've found so far, I will pass this info on.

Well found Shaun, certainly looks like it as it has the same DOB just under his name, and his wife was indeed Elsie.

Thanks.

Not the one born 25 February 1893 in Hawkhurst, Kent, married Elsie Edmeston in Barton Upon Irwell in 1925?

Lots of Ancestry trees have him as born Hawkhurst, but that's someone born in the June 1/4.

Our chap was born in Bolton in the March 1/4.

But yes sorry I did put the wrong date of marriage down to Elsie Edmeston, 1928 is the year their first son was born! It should indeed be 1925.
