Gazette listing for MM, G/73594 Cpl. Oakley W of Toronto

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31405/page/7663/data.pdf

I am surprised that it mentions him as being of Toronto.
He was born near Manchester on 25 Feb 1893,and married there in 1928.

Many thanks for what you've found so far, I will pass this info on.

Did he have any link to County Durham? There is a small village called Toronto near Bishop Auckland.

WIKI : The village is named after Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The name is derived from the Mohawk word tkaronto, meaning "place where trees stand in the water". A coal baron with land in County Durham was visiting the Canadian city when he was told that coal had been discovered under his land. He therefore decided to call the mine Toronto, whence the village also took its name.

yes sorry I did put the wrong date of marriage down to Elsie Edmeston, 1928 is the year their first son was born! It should indeed be 1925.

Walter & Elsie’s son born 1928 Reg Mar qtr. Manchester North had middle name Warren

Yes that is the family we have traced back generations.

But now I am wondering if the Kent chap was correct- although 'ours' was born on 25th February I am still more inclined to go for the Bolton chap born in March 1893.Not the southerner born in june 93.

Thanks for all your suggestions, looks like I have some family history to re look at tomorrow !
