Trying to find Alfred Ernest Walker
« on: Monday 09 May 22 16:34 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has any information on, or could find any on, Alfred E(a)rnest Walker born 1881. He lived in Kent and was born there.

He married my great grandmother, Letitia Pitcher, who was a traveller from the Scamp family. There is a marriage record for them in 1902. Alfred is in the 1911 census with Letitia and their 3 children at 6 Mill Lane, Dover, Kent. This is the only census I can find him.

That side of the family always said that Alfred Ernest Walker left Letitia and the children, and a man called William Kennaird took them in. However, we now think Letitia had an affair with William, making Alfred leave but are not entirely sure.

I am assuming that Alfred Ernest Walker was from a travelling family due to the fact that I can't find any other information on him and he married Letitia (a traveller). Although I don't think ''Walker'' is a typical traveller name.

I've gone back on the Pitchers and Kennairds families but it would be interesting to go back on the Walkers side.

Thank you! :)

Hi, thank you for replying,
I saw lots of hints for the War but unfortunately i don't have the substitution to view them, thank you for confirming they are correct.
Was the information about his marriage and children all on the one record?
Thanks again.

Yes, all on the same record, interestingly he had a "dependant" Naomi Tappenden and two more children when discharged.

I have just been looking at a 1921 entry that led me to Naomi Lappenden/Tappenden.
St Lawrence Intra, Thanet
Alfred Walker 1880 Deptford occ hawker
Maria Walker Walker  1889 Canterbury  relationship to head wife
Earnest Leppord Walker 1917 Ramsgate    relationship son
Rose Seppard Walker 1911 Ramsgate  relationship daughter
Births Walker/Tappenden in Thanet
1917 Ernest Alfred  & 1912 Margaret Mary Rose
R C baptism for daughter gives mother as Naomi Lappenden

The 1902 marriage certificate should give details of both fathers.
That could help.

Thank you so much Cathy and Comberton, that's really helpful. Do you think Naomi was the mum of Margaret Mary Rose, and the Maria in the census the mum of Ernest Alfred?

The link isn't working for some reason Cathy, but is it the census with William Kennaird and Letitia in 1911 as I have seen that one.

I can't seem to find the marriage banns between Alfred and Letitia to find the name of his dad. Do you know if banns are always documented?

Thanks everyone!

According to the Army records the marriage was in a Chapel, so a Civil ceremony.
You will have to buy the certificate.
