Fabulous, thank you very much for this, Allan.

Now the multi-million dollar question. ;-)
Would the 3-years apply for service either in the Regulars or Supplementary Reserve?

My own feeling is that he had to be Regular.
Why would he join a Regiment as a Reservist which has its 3rd (SR) Battalion based so far away from his home in  Newcastle-upon-Tyne? Sounds like making difficulties just for the sake of it.
But if he was a Regular, then the Service Number 5802 has to have been re-cycled.

In my own research, I have been fortunate in cases like this, to have found remnants of service papers that confirm the years of service as shown in an Admissions and Discharge register were service in the regular Army. As there aren't any surviving service papers for your man, I doubt that you will never be able to say one way or another.

Good luck in your research.

I don't know if you have access to Ancestry.co.uk but if you do, the link below will take you to a public family tree that has a photo of John A Cruddas in his uniform.

Looks like he was in no hurry to get back to civilian life!
Para 392 (XXV) = "Service being no longer required", but I'm not sure what the 'A' stands for.

I'm still struggling to pin down his enlistment (either into the Regulars, or, as Jim suggests, into the SR) and the only wartime record I can find after his arrival in France is his marriage in October 1917 when he was noted as being a Private in the KOSB.

(xxva) Surplus to military requirements (Not having suffered impairment since entry into the service).

scroll down to the list.

The photo on Ancestry identifies his date of birth as 4 8 1891. The below is in a list of files held at MoD and has the same date of birth

11006   ADH000652899   File   D/37514   NULL   CRUDDAS JA   NULL   AMPC   1891-08-04

The AMPC bit is in the column where a Regiment/Corps is usually indicated. Can't think off hand who they are though.

Very interesting - thanks Gwil.

AMPC = Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps

Can I ask where you found the MoD File reference ?

Presumably this is John Andrew CRUDDAS' WW2 Service Record.

Some years ago a member of the Great War Forum (called Jason I think) made FOI requests of the MoD to provide data on how many files they held of men born before 1901 and who served after 1920. Jason shared the resulting files of names and many members, including myself, compiled them all into one XL file.

Recently they have appeared on Ancestry.
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/61448/

Searching for an individual is not easy though. There's no gap between the initials of the given Christian names. In this case he's indexed as Ja Cruddas.

Searching a surname and date of birth (or just year of birth) should overcome how they have been indexed.

I don't think they necessarily mean that the individual had WW2 service.

Thanks again, Gwil.

Presumably the original records can be accessed by contacting the MoD.

Any idea what the best way is to do that ?

The AMPC only existed from 1939 to 1940 and was then incorporated into the Pioneer Corps.
