Showing my ignorance of the true situation in 18thC Scotland there, Forfarian!  Are there any unbiased texts on the subject that would be good to have a read of?
And many thanks, as I have repeatedly found myself gratefully saying, Kloumann, for that baptism.  I always get rather excited when an entry appears in the 18thC - so much longer ago than the 19th in my imagination...

Heading north from East Anglia now, but slightly south of Hadrian's Wall is my destination...

Have a look at
http://scottishhistorysociety.com/the-highland-clearances/ though the Society blots its copybook by not having a parallel item on the Lowland Clearances.

John Prebble's book The Highland Clearances is a long-standing account.

There's also The Lowland Clearances: Scotland's Silent Revolution 1760 - 1830 - see https://birlinn.co.uk/product/the-lowland-clearances/

And of course there are Wikipedia accounts
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowland_Clearances
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland_Clearances

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Allan McIntosh may have been Gamekeeper at this estate.

https://www.ambaile.org.uk/asset/37219/

There address in 1861 is listed as Lundy Private on same page as the estate's other gamekeepers

His daughter Bell or Isabel age 26 was living at the lodge as a general servant

Safely arrived somewhere near Carlisle to discover a suggested reading list - thanks very much for that Forfarian, and also further digging on my behalf with this MACINTOSH family.  A wonder what a group name for gamekeepers might be, Kloumann, a Gathering, a Gaggle...I'm sure there's a better suggestion out there.  Especially as it's a Murder of Crows...

Hi, Everyone,
Just returned from a lovely week on a farm near Penrith, but the nearest I got to visiting Glasgow or Elginshire was seeing the road sign on the A1M that said SCOTLAND just before Scotch Corner.  And now I must revisit this thread to ask for advice or tips about how to get up Census pages for the Allan Macintosh family in the 1841, 1851 or 1861.  Have had no trouble identifying and printing off the images of marriages, births and deaths on Scotlands People, but I have had no joy so far when putting is as many details of the family there on a Census search as I can think of.
Nor on the FreeCen website.  It keeps coming up with a zero result.  Can anyone advise me about what I might be doing wrongly.  Probably something very obvious...

I certainly managed to view the 1861 on SP. searching under Urquhart & Glenmoriston for McIntosh. Ref 107/24/1. Ref for the 1851 census on SP is 107/14/4. Allan, Jane, Betsy, Isabella, John & Gr son, Alexander. 1871 finds Jane with Betsy & Gr Son William in Glenmoriston. Ref 107/24/1

Hi again, Kloumann,
Thanks very much for that, in the end on Scotlands People I went into Search Options for both Surname and Forename and changed "Exact names only" to " Phonetic matching" and that seemed to do the trick...have successfully downloaded the 1851 and 1861 Censuses.  Will have a look at the 1871 now...
