Pithers pre1810 Boveney Bucks
« on: Tuesday 17 May 22 06:59 BST (UK) »
Hi all
I’m new to Rootschat and would like to find out more about William Pithers’ extended family in Buckinghamshire and surrounds. He was a Chelsea Veteran who sailed with his family per Indian in 1809 to Sydney as one of Lachlan Macquarie’s 73rd Reg. Previously had served with 46th, 70th, 57th regiments.
I have loads of info about the very successful and intriguing Australian side of this family to share.
We just lost my mum aged 97, who was William’s great granddaughter
Any help out there ?

There is a Chelsea record on FindMyPast which states his birthplace as Eton. Eton is only 2-3 miles from Boveney, but it is in Berkshire.

Hi Shaun
All his army records and NSW settler records name Boveney, the small village with the ancient stone church, as his origins. Sometimes Burnham is mentioned. I understand Eton and Windsor are thereabouts too.
I recently found a John Pithers from Boveney too in the early army records. Would have to be a relative don’t you think? Fascinating family so far.

Eton is now in Berkshire, but in 1810 it was in Buckinghamshire.

Boveney church is on the banks of the Thames.  It is within walking distance of Eton (and therefore Windsor just over the bridge), and Burnham.  It is also within a stone's throw of Dorney Lake where the Olympic rowing competitions were held in 2012.

I can't see anything at the moment for William Pithers, but there are a number of Pithers families in Burnham and some in Eton.

Thanks for your interest Nell
What a nice neck of the woods that area is. Pithers clan seemed to have been farmers and soldiers. Unusual name here in Sydney. He was granted 100 acres which is now Lakemba/Belmore area. Largely forgotten until they recently renamed a street - Pithers St.
