Slopsellers or Clothes Brokers
« on: Tuesday 17 May 22 17:25 BST (UK) »
Slopsellers and Clothes Brokers. I read one source that suggests that these occupations require the bulk purchase of clothes (by auction ?) from war "booty" via "Navy Agents" selling them as military surplus ?

Wikipedia suggests that a Slopseller was "A Dealer in ready-made clothing".  Plus various other sites offer the same sort of occupation.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Lots of mentions in old newspapers of slopsellers, however this is the only one with a military connection (that I could see).

Most seem to imply just dealing in ready made clothing.  :)

It might be an idea to post a bit of context to your query i.e. who, when & where?

Names, dates & areas can unfold a lot in research.
