Naval history request about my Ancestor William Rouffignac
« on: Tuesday 17 May 22 17:29 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone .

I have a brief bit of background history reg my 6th G Grandfather William Rouffignac from Newlyn born 1729 . I know at some point he was a Mid shipman in the royal Navy/Portsmouth.

On one article(very old) it say's William was on the " Torrentime or Torrentine"?ship. "Please could anyone tell me a bit about this ship?". This would enlighten me on William's past career as a Naval Man. Thank you i appreciate any support with this Family Tree research.

Do you have a copy of this article? There might be some additional clues in it that can help us.

I did a quick search in the newspapers for the UK, and I couldn't find any mention of a ship by the name Torrentime or Torrentine. Which is odd, because ships did tend to get mentioned in newspapers a lot.
;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

HMS Torrington perhaps? Launched in 1743.

National Archives has these 2 records, unfortunately not digitised.   (The last two on the page)

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_q=rouffignac&_p=1700

added.
A tree on Ancestry has

"Serves HMS's Torrington, Princess Mary (1st Cousin John Amherst Cpt and became Midshipman Dec 1746, The Harwich 1748, The Amazon 1750."

so probably correct Shaun.
Marriage licence says he is Mate of HMS Duke

thank you all for the replies reg William Rouffignac and his Naval stint. It is most likely that he served on the HMS Torrington as a young man. They joined up early in those days.. Plus the name Amherst stands out . William's Aunt Eliz Married a Sir Jeffrey Amherst . Sorry but the document i found reg the Navy work is very old print and i cannot attach it to the rootschat site for you. I think the name  "Man Of War " was mentioned too. Once again thank you for your support and any further help would be appreciated . Best wishes.

Could you photograph the document with your phone and upload it?
Perhaps you might need to do it in sections.

There seems to be quite a lot of information about him in pages 280-282 of the Proceedings of the Huguenot  Society, Vol V:

Torrington confirmed

Other ships mentioned: Princess Mary, Preston, Harwich  and Amazon
