Durham/Lunduld
« on: Thursday 19 May 22 00:04 BST (UK) »
Hi
I hope this finds you and those close to you in good health and peace of mind.
My 2nd great grandmother, Hannah Smith (nee Wilson) b 1843, with parents Daniel and Jane, is listed as born in these places in these census:
-1851 Monkwearmouth (MWM), Durham
-1861 Sunderland, Durham
-1871 Lunduld, Durham
-1881 Bishopwearmouth (BWM), Durham
-1891 Durham
MWM is on the north side of River Wear and BWM on the south and both are part of Sunderland.
I am wondering about the 1871, Lunduld Durham. I haven't found a place to match it and wonder if it is a building or street name.
Could anyone help?
best wishes, Joe

I haven’t managed to locate all the census entries you quoted on here, but Hannah’s birth certificate should answer your question as to where she was born. You can order it from the GRO. You could also try looking through the Bishops Transcripts for any baptismal record.
Was Hannah a Wilson on all these census entries or had she married to become a Smith?

Hello Joe and welcome to RootsChat

I haven't located Hannah in the 1871 (could you provide the reference number, or a snip of the location?) however, looking at some of the other entries for the area, I think it may simply say "Sunderland" in poor writing.  :)

eg, from RG10/5004/58 pg 27

I agree with Maddy. I think it actually says ‘Sunderl(an)d.

Hi all
Thanks for the replies.
Yes, I can see now that Lunduld, was probably a misread Sunderl(an)d.
That's great. I got her marriage certificate just recently to find her birth family, but not her birth certificate yet. I have the gro reference for her birth cert, but not her death cert. I think she may have remarried, as only one Hannah Smith died in Sunderland in 1899, the death year reported in some family trees for her, but that was for a newborn infant Hannah Agnes Smith.
BTW she married on 15 April 1863, in Bishowearmouth (where her parents married also) and she and all her siblings were christened in Monkwearmouth.
Best wishes, Joe

I attach a cutting from the 1871 census listing her birth place.

probably remarried, because her husband died at only 37yo.
